Description
The I-400 was constructed as a submergible aircraft carrier. It was able to launch three Seiran aircraft. The world had never seen one before. With an overall length of 122m, width of 12m, and a 6,560 ton displacement, the size was comparable to a destroyer class warship and it was the world’s largest submarine at the time. The I-400 had the ability to circumnavigate the world one and a half times without needing to refuel or restock. It was believed possible for the I-400 to make surprise attacks both on the U.S. East Coast and the Allied-held Panama Canal. Construction of the I-400 was completed near the end of the WWII in December 1944. It was on its way with the second submarine in its class the I-401 to the U.S. Naval base at Ulithi, however neither submarine saw action due to the end of the war. It is said that due to its superior design, the I-400 is a forerunner of modern day strategic nuclear missile submarines. This kit builds the mammoth form of the I-400. Features clear parts around the cylindrical hangar to show off the three Seiran aircraft that can be placed inside. The canopy parts is also clear. Photo-etched parts really up the detail on crane arm, antenna pole, Seiran propellers and handrails. Guideline stickers are included to help with attachment of the handrail parts. Four metal torpedoes, 48 figures and a display base are also included. Length: 348.5mm.
