Description
Celebrate Tamiya’s 50th anniversary in proper style. There is so much to love about this release, it genuinely feels special, and it’s a fitting way to celebrate everything Tamiya has achieved over the last five decades. The headline feature is the totally unique chassis, designed to actively mimic the behaviour of the real car. That alone makes it something special. Superb.
There’s a strong TRF influence throughout the build, and when you dig into the details you can see just how many tuning options are available to fine-tune the handling. It’s clear that Tamiya has put real effort into capturing the character of the 934 through this platform, rather than simply creating a commemorative shelf piece.
The 30th Anniversary model was 4WD, as were the 40th and 45th Anniversary cars. While the original 934 was 2WD, let’s be realistic, releasing a period-correct 2WD chassis today would largely appeal to collectors looking to keep it boxed. It may have been fun back in the day, but a straight re-release would have been a weak way to celebrate 50 years, leaning purely on nostalgia and missing the broader journey of Tamiya as a brand.
Instead, this feels like a celebration of evolution. My only hope now is that these are produced in enough numbers that we actually see them on track, because this is a car that deserves to be driven, not hidden away.
Motor Position
- Motor is positioned centrally and lengthwise to make the chassis layout similar to that of the actual car. The power is transmitted as follows:
- Pinion gear A → Spur gear → Propeller shaft → Pinion gear B → Spur gear → Gear differential (spur gears are new 66T design and all gears are 04 module. Gear differential is the one used on the TB-05 chassis)
- Change pinion gears A and B to adjust gear ratio
- Parts around gearbox are aluminium
